Spirit vs Flesh: Why Feeding the Spirit Changes the Fight Against Porn

I prayed for freedom from porn almost every day. And almost every day, I gave God about one percent of my life.

The other ninety-nine percent went to everything else. I was asking God to fill me while I kept filling myself with other things, and then I wondered why nothing changed.

It took me years to understand why that did not work. The answer is in a short passage where Paul explains the battle of Spirit vs flesh, and it changed how I fight.

I Was Disciplined. Porn Was Different.

This one was hard to admit, because I was not a weak person in other areas. I quit nicotine. I cut out alcohol. I trained, took cold showers and said no to junk food. Discipline worked for me almost everywhere.

But not with porn. I struggled with it for more than twenty years, and my willpower kept breaking in the same place. The short version is that I was fighting a spiritual battle mostly with human strength.

What the Bible Means by Spirit vs Flesh

In Galatians 5, Paul describes Spirit vs flesh as two forces pulling in opposite directions inside every believer.

“For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.” (Galatians 5:17, NIV)

The flesh here does not mean your body as such. It is the part of us that pulls toward sin and selfish desire. The Spirit is the Holy Spirit, living in those who belong to Christ. They want opposite things, and both are fighting for your attention.

Then Paul gives the strategy.

“So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” (Galatians 5:16, NIV)

Notice what he does not say. He does not say, try harder to resist the flesh. He says walk by the Spirit. The focus is not mainly on the sin. It is on staying close to God.

A few verses later he puts it like this.

“Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” (Galatians 5:24-25, NIV)

Keeping in step is a daily thing. You do not walk with someone once and then stay in step for the rest of your life. You keep walking.

Self-Control Is Fruit, Not Just Pressure

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22-23, NIV)

Self-control is on that list, and it is called fruit.

A fruit tree does not produce apples by straining. It produces them because it is planted, watered and alive. In the same way, self-control grows as fruit of the Spirit as you stay close to God. You still act on that growth through real choices and real boundaries, but the strength behind the choice is no longer only yours.

Paul says the same thing about spiritual growth in another letter.

“So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.” (1 Corinthians 3:7, NIV)

You can plant and water. You can read, pray and set boundaries. But the growth itself comes from God. That took a heavy weight off my shoulders.

For me, one turning point came when the phrase fear of the Lord stood out while I was reading Scripture. As I studied Proverbs, I understood it was not about being terrified of God. It was reverence, a holy seriousness about who He is.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” (Proverbs 9:10, NIV)

Slowly, God moved from the edge of my life toward the center. And when He was at the center, porn started to lose the place it had held for so long.

What Are You Feeding?

In the battle of Spirit vs flesh, whatever you feed grows, and whatever you starve grows weaker.

“Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.” (Romans 8:5, NIV)

Where your mind is set decides which side of Spirit vs flesh gets stronger. If you spend hours on content that stirs lust and minutes with God, the flesh is getting the bigger meal. That was exactly my one-percent problem. I was praying for one harvest while planting the opposite seed.

“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” (Colossians 3:2, NIV)

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12:2, NIV)

Renewing the mind is not a one-time event. It happens through what you let in, day after day. This does not mean you can never watch a film or open an app. It means you are honest about what is shaping your desires, and you stop feeding what you are asking God to remove.

What This Looks Like Today

Freedom is not passive. You stay close to God, and you act in wisdom. Here is where I would start:

  1. Scripture before scrolling. Read the Bible in the morning before you open social media.
  2. Remove sexualized content. Not only porn, but the shows, accounts and images that feed lust.
  3. Pray honestly. Not only take this away, but draw me closer to You.
  4. Stay connected. Isolation feeds the flesh, so let at least one person know how you are really doing.
  5. Act early. When temptation begins, move fast. The five stages of porn temptation show why the first seconds matter most.

Notice the order in this verse: “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7, NIV) Submitting to God comes first. Resisting comes out of that.

Questions People Ask

Does this mean discipline does not matter?

No. Boundaries, filters and good habits matter, and I still use them. They are just not the foundation. Discipline without God at the center wore me out. Discipline that flows from staying close to Him lasts much longer.

Why do I still feel temptation if I am following God?

Because the Spirit vs flesh conflict Paul describes is real for every believer. Feeling the pull of the flesh does not mean the Spirit has left you. It means the battle is on. After more than 200 days of freedom, I fell again. I still had my routine, but my focus on God had grown weak. Watchfulness is not a phase you graduate from. It is a lifestyle.

Feed What You Want to Grow

You cannot win the fight of Spirit vs flesh by focusing only on the thing you want to stop. Put God at the center, feed the Spirit every day, and the fruit of self-control will grow. Slowly at first, but for real.

“fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:2, NIV)

Where your eyes are fixed, your life slowly follows.

Breaking the Hidden Chains walks through this in much more depth, together with practical steps for triggers, habits and long-term freedom.
